What a still can and cannot become

Motion that extends the frame works: a slow push in, a pan that reveals what was implied at the edge, atmospheric movement like smoke or water. Motion that contradicts the frame does not: asking a subject to turn around, walk out of shot, or perform an action the pose does not support produces the distortion people associate with bad AI video. The practical rule is that the image is a keyframe, not a prompt. Choose stills with clear depth and an obvious direction of implied movement, and the result is a shot you would actually cut into a video.

Using a reference image inside a full pipeline

ShortLoom takes a reference image and generates from it, but the more useful pattern is using it as the anchor for a whole video rather than a one-off clip. A saved character keeps the same person across every scene of a multi-cut video; a saved product reference keeps the same item across cutaways instead of a different-looking product each time. That is the difference between a novelty conversion and a production tool. Every scene prompt is visible before rendering, so a shot that misreads the reference is a text fix.

Practical limits worth knowing up front

Clip length from a single still is short by nature, and pushing it produces drift, so plan on cutting between several generated shots rather than one long move. Faces are the hardest case and the one where consistency breaks first, which is exactly why the character reference exists. If your source image is a photograph of a real person, treat it as a likeness question and not just a technical one - use images you have the right to use, and label the output as AI-generated where the platforms require it.
